''I can’t praise the benefits of Pilates enough. For me initially it was about managing pain. To a degree
that is still so but it’s also about how my body has changed for the better. I
can’t imagine any reason why I would ever stop practising Pilates.” Julia, Artist
The Pilates method is currently rising in popularity
but its benefits have been enjoyed for decades by dancers, gymnasts and sports people since it was invented by Joseph Pilates
in the 1920s.
Pilates offers both mental and physical training,
teaching you to be in control of your body. Targeting the key postural muscles, it works to build strength from the
inside out and rebalances your body. By focussing on core strength, flexiblity and posture, students see continuing
results: they look better, feel better and are challenged on multiple levels.
With regular practice, you can expect
to benefit from:
- Improved flexbility
- Greater strength and muscle tone
- Longer, leaner muscles
- Improved posture
- Less incidence of back pain
- Lower stress levels
Precise, controlled flowing movements mean that the muscle
and ligament damage sometimes associated with other fitness regimes is avoided. Pilates is ideally suited to all ages
and levels of fitness, as the exercises are tailored to individual needs and abilities. Posture, balance and core strength
are all greatly increased. Bone density and joint health improve and many people experience positive body awareness
for the first time.
Whether you are an athlete or sports person wanting to enhance
your performance, somone recovering from an injury, suffering with back or neck pain, or simply looking for a greater sense
of wellbeing, Pilates can help you. You can build a strong, healthy, balanced mind and body.
Pilates for Performance
Pilates focuses on working the body as a whole; strengthening
weak muslces and stretching overused or tight muscles. The technique improves the fleixbility of the joints and lengthens
the spine. This all helps to produce a more balanced body and better patterns of movement - reducing the potential for
injury. Specialised sessions which focus on sport specific exercise programmes are available.
Pilates
for Rehabilitation
Many people are introduced to Pilates as part of their treatment
after they have suffered an injury. The exercises performed are gentle - but that doesnt mean you dont have to make
an effort! It is also ideally suited for people suffering with chronic health problems such as back pain.
That is why oesteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners are now recommending Pilates as one of the safest forms
of exercise today.
